From the recording Let's Talk
Lyrics
LET’S TALK
Let’s talk
you and me
we may not
always agree
But let’s talk
you and me
And we may find
how alike we can see
Sworn social media enemies we may be
But that doesn’t mean I should trash everything you stand for or believe
— or maybe I should —
Let’s talk
you and me
we may not
always agree
But let’s talk
you and me
And we may learn
eye to eye to see
I may not be your evil communist in disguise
And maybe under your out-and-out fascism you are quite wise
— although I doubt it —
You may dox me and threaten me with my life
I may have to block you, and that would be all right
But let’s talk
you and me
we may not
ever agree
But let’s talk
you and me
And we may find
our common humanity
— although I doubt it

This is a song inspired by social media flame wars, not that I’ve been involved in many. One time on someone else’s FB feed I got into a thrust-and-parry about Trump’s response to Covid, with someone who later private messaged me with information I hadn’t volunteered, saying in effect, just because you graduated from McGill and that doesn’t mean you’re so smart. Although he probably gleaned that info from my “About” page, I felt like I was being doxed. It also turns out he had a Confederate flag on his profile picture. Of course, I blocked him.
Now that Mr Zuckerberg has given up on fact checking to zuk up to you know who, things may get even worse. Like most, I curate my feed very carefully – for the most part it’s a nice, polite echo chamber – but who knows how long that’ll last. — BC
